What you will need?

First of all, you will need two key things, an android phone with camera (we don’t need a pro camera but it depends of the quality you want to reach) and a fixed spot to record the timelapse. Remember that a good timelapse will take some recording time, so you will without a phone for a while.

What’s the Timelapse Interval?

The interval is the time between two shots within a timelapse sequence. This is, we’re talking about the time between the start of one exposure to the next start, a really important timing for long exposures.

As a main rule, your interval must be longer than your shutter speed. This interval will fundamentally influence how your timelapse will result. The longer your interval, the faster your timelapse will look.

How to choose the timelapse interval?

Now that we know what a timelapse interval is, let’s learn how to choose it! Here, we can find two different ways to set the interval:

When you have already decided the speed and the total length of your timelapse

You must always remember that depending on what you will like to shoot, there’s a suitable interval that will capture the movements in a better way, getting the perfect timelapse.

Let’s see some examples, that will enable you to choose the timelapse interval correctly in any situation.

If you’re willing to calculate the duration, divide the total length that you have in mind by timelapse interval, for example: you want to shoot a 30-second-long timelapse with a 5s interval, this is, 30 seconds of footage at 25fps needs 750 frames.

Multiplying the number of frames (750) with your interval (5s), the result is 3750 seconds, which means that you will need to shoot the timelapse during 62,5 minutes (3750 seconds)

When length and duration are clear to you

Once you have already decided about the total length of your timelapse and duration, you have a easy path to calculate the interval. These are the steps to go: select the the frame rate (24, 25, or 30 fps) and transform the shoot duration to seconds.

Let’s see an example: one hour is 1 x 60 x 60 seconds, which is 3600 seconds. From here, you can calculate how many frames your timelapse needs, if you want 20 seconds of 30fps video; 20 x 30 is 600 frames in total.

Now, we will calculate the timelapse interval, dividing the duration (3600s) by the number of frames (600). The result is 6, which will be your interval in this example.

Other ways to calculate the timelapse interval

The most trustable method to rely on is a intervalometer, that can be bought apart and nowadays, many professional cameras have one included in their options by default. You can easily find it in the menu if your camera has one.

If you’re willing to create a timelapse with your GoPro, you must take into account that there are two ways: taking a series of photos to place them into a sequence to create a video or shooting directly as a standard video.

Taking a series of photos

To make a timelapse from raw photos, first you have to actually shoot photos. A lot. So these are the steps to make the best out of this part:

Set your GoPro to capture timelapse footage

Before everything else, you have to set this mode in your GoPro:

• Click the top SHUTTER button to start recording.
• The camera’s red LEDs will blink to indicate that the camera is capturing footage, and the time counter will show the amount of timelapse video footage captured.
• Press again the top SHUTTER button again to stop your recording.

Select your frame

Take your time to select a good frame and set the desired exposure, taking into account that the better raw material you get, the better timelapse you will get. Choose an interesting point of view or a breathless landscape.

Always use a Tripod

Your photos must be stable and shot from the exact same point all the time, so the tripod is a must if you’re looking to do a correct timelapse.

Apart of the tripod, you can need attachments and mounts, that normally can be found in the GoPro kit.

Don’t focus on tiny details, what counts is the series of photos

Don’t worry if some of the images you make are not perfect, because in the editing process you can remove them. Remember this, later you will always have time to delete, edit or modify, just focus in getting as much material as you can.

Always use a good Memory Card

Always make sure you have a memory card that can keep up with you, our recommendation is to have one that at least a 32GB Class 10 memory card. Maybe with a slower card you could be ok, but is safer not to take the risk as it won’t probably keep up with the incoming new images.

Take your time

Take your time and make sure you don’t have to come back and shoot everything again. You won’t regret it!

Build a timelapse from the photos

Now that you have all the photos that you need for a timelapse, you must edit them and set them as a sequence to actually create a video.

Record a timelapse video directly

If you willing to create a timelapse shooting directly in video format, you must follow these steps with you GoPro camera:

• Turn on your GoPro camera
• Select ‘Video’ using the front button or through GoPro App
• Press the ‘Settings’ button on the side of your GoPro or through GoPro App
• Select ‘Timelapse Video Mode’ from the menu

• Once everything is set, press the top button to start shooting

GoPro Night Lapse

From the GoPro Hero 4 and newer devices, Night Photo and Night Lapse modes are included, allowing you to use your camera for sunrise, sunset and night time shots with more clarity and definition.
